Buffalo Springs Farm, c. 1773
Situated at the confluence of free-flowing streams and blessed with numerous springs, Buffalo Springs Farm has offered a welcome resting place for residents and wildlife alike tracing back to the buffalo and Native Americans who freely traveled the Shenandoah centuries ago.
The solid brick McFadden House overlooks Otts creek from a knoll, which enjoys unobstructed views of the surrounding countryside. The home is replete with numerous original features including hardware, antique glass, and woodwork crafted from native oak, walnut, heartpine, and poplar.
The keeping room enjoys a massive stone fireplace and has been fitted with a square wood-mold brick floor. The living room and hall display beaded paneling and buttermilk paint. The new kitchen, bath, and sunroom coupled with subtle additions of updated mechanical systems throughout are masterfully joined to the 1841 addition to create a thoroughly pleasant atmosphere of comfort and security. In sum there are four bedrooms, two and one-half baths, and six fireplaces.
Appurtenant structures include an authentic hand-hewn log cabin containing a greatroom with stone fireplace, a modest commercial kitchen adjacent to a small dining gallery, one bedroom and one bath; a gardener’s cabin; a bank barn with interior refinements to match a variety of enterprises; a garage with workshop; a tractor barn; the corncrib; and the original stone springhouse.
The gardens are masterfully composed of theme garden rooms for herbs, a four-square Colonial heritage vegetable garden with raised beds, a contemporary vegetable garden, and an array of stone steps and walls graced with a multitude of flowering shrubs and perennials.
The open and rolling pastures and hayfields support a herd of cattle.
The woodland is home to abundant wildlife and an inspiring trail to Tuscarora Falls, a natural waterfall located on the farm.
Conservation and Historic Easements serve to protect and preserve the integrity of the farm for future generations. 154 acres.
